Insiders know that because El Hierro is not directly accessible and the airport and port are very small, there is no mass tourism here. This means no hotel castles, but instead cozy apartments and rustic country cottages. The best place to look for accommodation is on the relevant internet platforms such as Airbnb www.airbnb.com.

The journey is via either Gran Canaria or Tenerife. From there, you can continue with an island plane or by ferry.

Travel via Gran Canaria
Choose your flight so that you can fly with the Canary Islands airline Binter www.bintercanarias.com you can fly on to El Hierro on the same day. Sometimes flights are also offered by the airline Canaryfly www.canaryfly.es.

Flight time to El Hierro approx. 50 minutes.

Arrival via Tenerife
Proceed in the same way as described above for Gran Canaria. But be careful!!! International flights usually land at Tenerife South Airport. However, the onward flight to El Hierro leaves from Tenerife North Airport!!!

Please allow approx. 3 hours for the transfer from South Airport to North Airport. There are regular direct buses (1 hour journey time). A rental car one-way can be worthwhile for two people.

Flight time to El Hierro then approx. 40 minutes.

Often the better alternative for traveling via Tenerife is the ferry.
Due to the transfer time between the airports on Tenerife, the alternative by ferry is usually just as fast.

The ferry port in Los Cristianos is only about 15-20 minutes away from the South International Airport. There is a bus from the airport to the port in Los Cristianos. From the bus station in Los Cristianos to the ferry port is a 15 minute walk.
If you are traveling with a lot of luggage, then a cab from the airport directly to the ferry is certainly more convenient. Especially if the transfer time is a little tight. Or you can take a cab from the bus station to the port.
